Slammed Paw in door!

Post by mel2mdl on Sat Jul 11, 2009 11:30 pm

I posted this on GC too. Hubbies doesn't want to go to the vet, so...

I was putting food dishes into the cage and Diego jumped on the door. I didn't realize that he was near the hinge when I closed it. He crabbed and it took a second or two to figure out how to open the door back up.

Two of his fingers look swollen, but:

- he is eating worms
- he is using his hand
- he is walking on it, just keeps pulling it up every few minutes

He keeps looking at the paw, washing it, washing his face, washing his other paw, then washing the hurt one. He came to me and ran up my arm and is acting fairly normal - just a little jumpy.

Would I be safe to watch him and wait or does he need to go to the vet now? He is not bleeding and not chewing - I do have e-collars on hand. I also have metacam from a previous injury - different glider, but don't remember if that is antibiotic or pain killer.

I am so freaked out right now I just can't think. I can't believe I did this to him. It is 11:30 here.

I really don't think it's broken - he is using it, but limping a bit. I'm all dressed and ready to go, but hubbie keeps saying no. Looking up vet info now... I may wait 30 minutes and see, but I am watching. I am also sitting up right next to the cage.

He is washing it, but he is also washing his face and other paws at the same rate.

I would say watch it. How swollen is it? Was it in a part that closed tight on him? Its hard to say.

Re: Slammed Paw in door!

Post by mel2mdl on Sun Jul 12, 2009 12:16 am

I just pulled all 4 gliders out and I can't tell who got slammed - Sam or Diego. I thought it was Diego, but now... Their paws look the same. I'm pretty sure it was Diego.

I think I panicked - he just looked so hurt and wouldn't let me near him. The swelling wasn't much to with and now seems to be gone. Delilah keeps following him around though and washing his butt.

He was holding the worms with the hurt paw right after it happened, guess that might mean it wasn't hurt too badly, huh? And he did get a ton of meal worms! Maybe he thought if he acted sad, he'd get more! (And he was right...)

Thank you for the responses!

You know, I did this once too. It took me awhile to remember. I freaked too, but he was ok. If you can not see any swelling or redness he should probably be ok. Just keep an eye out, I know you already know that. *HUGS* for the freak out moment!

Tough call. Normally I'd say vet, but I think if you keep an eye on them, maybe check on them during the night when he'll be at his most active.

My heart beats were going faster and faster as I was reading.
I can just imagine how stressful it must have been for you, Molly.

I will keep Diego (and whoever else could be hurt too) in my prayers, hoping that he (them) will be fine soon. ***HUGS***

Hope Diego is okay Molly, sorry I didn't see this sooner.

Don't know what you ended up doing but I don't believe Metacam has a long shelf life and depending on when you used it, it may not be good. I wouldn't use it without consulting your vet first.

As far as his fingers go, keep a watch on Diego today. If the swelling is still there or he is paying attention to them, I'd take him to the vet or call them today.

And HUGS Molly, I've did the same thing before to my Jack. He jumped up on the cage door as I was closing it and caught his little toe too. He crabbed, my heart stopped because I KNEW what had happened, I felt horrible!!!

I think a lot of us have done that before. I've done it with the raccoons and because they have ten times the feeling in their hands and feet that you and I do, UGH! It's horrible and they CRY!!!

Didn't realize I hadn't updated over here - all is well. The swelling went down before I went to bed (I was up LATE). This morning, there is not even a redness to you.

I knew last night when he started using both paws to try to grab my hands thru the cage (he likes to taste) that he was probably okay.

That group - Sam, Diego, Delilah and Bedelia - did not get much rest today. I kept pulling them out and checking feet! Even though I know it was Diego who got hurt!
