bite on tail

Post by joey on Sun Jul 19, 2009 10:40 pm

We had an escapee get into a fight through the cage and get a bite on his tail. We have the pair in a small cage to keep an eye on. We have used saline wash to wash it out and put neosporin on it. Anything else we should do for now? Sorry this is jumbled but not really thinking straight here.

Make sure he doesn't start SMing, do you have e-collars on hand? Where on his tail is the bite? If it's towards the tip, you my need to put a straw on the tail as well as the e-collar to keep him from getting to it, if he starts chewing on it. Make sure his mate isn't messing with it too much either. I'd probably bring him to the vet if it's a bad bite. Also, keep an eye out for infection & get him in for antibiotics if it looks infected. hug Good luck & I'm sorry this happened.

We are trying to keep him from messing with it. Yes we have an e-collar, tried putting it on him but he slipped out again. The wound is about half way up his tail.

How bad is the wound? Can you post a picture. You should get some "Collasate" spray (vets usually have it) or you can get on the internet. Collasate spray is a wound dressing. It is very bitter and it helps keeping them away from the site.

I would also take him to the Vet asap!
